Digital Tal-nori

An interactive art program where users interact with their own hand-painted Tal using AR



Digital Tal-nori is a related program to the Hallyu! exhibition at the V&A Museum in England. This artwork was inspired by Korean traditional mask play. You can interact with your hand-painted Tal using AR and learn about traditional Korean culture along the way.


디지털 탈-놀이는 영국 V&A 박물관의 Hallyu! 전시의 연계 프로그램으로, 한국의 탈에서 영감을 받아 만들어졌습니다.
탈과 탈 놀이에 대해 배우고, 직접 색칠한 탈을 AR로 착용해보면서 한국의 전통 문화에 대해 배울 수 있습니다.

Step 1 : What is Tal?

Learn about Tal and Tal-nori, the types of Tals and each character, and about Obangsaek.

탈을 창작하기에 앞서 한국의 전통 탈과 탈놀이, 탈놀이에 등장하는 캐릭터에 대해 알아보고 오방색에 대해 배웁니다.


Step 2 : Share My Tal

Using the art tools users want, such as crayons and colored pencils, they color their own masks based on three types of mask design: Somu, Malttugi, and Lion. Once they're done, they can upload their artwork using a camera on their smartphone or tablet. The share page for uploading images uses OpenCV to automatically recognize and scan an A4 sheet of paper when a user takes a photo and extract the Tal image.

크레용, 색연필 등 자신이 원하는 미술 도구를 이용해 미리 준비된 소무, 말뚝이, 사자 도안을 바탕으로 자신만의 탈을 완성합니다. 그림을 완성하면 핸드폰이나 태블릿 등의 카메라를 이용해 자신의 작품을 업로드 합니다. 업로드 페이지에서는 OpenCV를 이용해 사용자가 사진을 촬영하면 자동으로 A4용지를 인식, 스캔하여 도안 이미지만 추출하는 기능을 제공합니다.

Step 3 : Play with Tal!

Using augmented reality (AR) based on TensorFlow machine learning, users can try on their own masks and those of other participants and pose in different ways. Like Instagram's filters, users can also save their current screen to their device as a photo or video.

TensorFlow 머신러닝을 기반으로 한 증강현실(AR)을 이용해 자신이 만든 탈과 다른 참여자들이 만든 탈을 직접 쓰고 다양한 포즈를 취할 수 있습니다. 또한 인스타그램의 필터처럼 사진이나 영상으로 현재 화면을 자신의 디바이스에 저장할 수 있습니다.
